What is Qurbani?

Qurbani, also called Udhiyah, is the offering made during Eid al-Adha as an act of worship and gratitude to Allah ﷻ. It recalls Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and follows the practice of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

It is more than purchasing meat or making an ordinary donation: the intention and a valid animal being slaughtered within the prescribed time are essential.

Who should offer Qurbani?

The schools differ on its legal status. In the Hanafi school it is generally wajib for a sane, adult, resident Muslim who owns wealth beyond essential needs and debts at the applicable nisab level. The Maliki, Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools generally regard it as a strongly recommended Sunnah for those able to afford it.

Whether one offering covers a household or each eligible person should take a separate share depends on the school and circumstances. Confirm the number of shares with a trusted scholar before using the calculator.

Which animals and shares are valid?

A sheep or goat is one Qurbani share. A cow, buffalo or camel may be divided into up to seven genuine shares; no person’s share may be less than one seventh.

The animal must meet the required minimum age and be healthy, properly cared for and free from disqualifying defects. Age rules differ by species, so use a reputable local provider who verifies the animal before slaughter.

When is Qurbani performed?

Qurbani begins after the Eid al-Adha prayer on 10 Dhul Hijjah. Scholars differ on whether the final valid time is sunset on 12 or 13 Dhul Hijjah, so providers commonly work within the first three days to satisfy both views.

Book early enough for the provider to purchase an eligible animal and complete the slaughter during the valid local time.

How should the meat be shared?

A widely recommended practice is to keep a portion, gift a portion to relatives or neighbours, and give a portion to people in need. These thirds are guidance rather than a calculator requirement, and giving more—or all—to those in need can be appropriate.

Choose a provider with clear animal-welfare, slaughter, traceability and distribution procedures, and follow the law where the Qurbani is performed.

Before arranging Qurbani

Eligibility and whether Qurbani is obligatory or strongly recommended differ between schools of law. Animals must meet age and health requirements, and sacrifice must take place in its prescribed time.

Confirm the animal, slaughter, distribution and local legal requirements with a trusted provider or scholar.

Enter the price of a whole animal above. If a provider quotes only a one-seventh cow or camel share, multiply that quote by seven before entering the animal cost.
