Appropriate clothing

Dress in Islam is an act of worship and dignity, not a measure of a person's worth.

• Modesty (haya) covers clothing, gaze, speech and conduct together — cloth alone is not the whole of it.
• Allah ﷻ instructs believing men and women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty.
• Never use dress to shame, police or rank other Muslims.

• Clothing should be opaque, not see-through, and loose enough not to trace the shape of the body.
• Avoid clothing worn purely for arrogance, fame or extravagance.
• Men and women should not dress so as to imitate the opposite gender.
• Clothing should not carry imagery, slogans or symbols that contradict Islamic belief.

• The area from the navel to the knee must be covered at minimum, including in public and at sport.
• Silk and gold are not worn by men; simple, clean and dignified clothing is encouraged.
• Trousers or garments are commonly kept above the ankles, avoiding trailing them out of pride.

• The majority position is that the body is covered before non-mahram men, with scholars differing over the face and hands.
• The khimar (headcover) and an outer covering are described in the Quran; styles vary widely by culture and all can be valid.
• Adornment and beauty are freely enjoyed before a husband, mahram relatives and other women within decency.
• A woman who has not yet begun to cover is still a full Muslim; growth is gradual and personal.

• For salah, men cover navel to knee and women cover the body except face and hands, per the majority.
• Work uniforms, medical settings and safety gear are accommodated — cover what you can and seek reasonable adjustments.
• In non-Muslim countries dress with confidence and courtesy; modest professional clothing rarely conflicts with either.
• Cleanliness, fragrance and neatness are part of the Sunnah of appearance.
