When you sneeze

The response is a short exchange. A listener responds when the sneezer praises Allah ﷻ.

The person who sneezes

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

Al-ḥamdu lillāh

All praise is for Allah ﷻ.

The person who hears it replies

يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ

Yarḥamuka-llāh

May Allah ﷻ have mercy on you.

The sneezer replies

يَهْدِيكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيُصْلِحُ بَالَكُمْ

Yahdīkumu-llāhu wa yuṣliḥu bālakum

May Allah ﷻ guide you and set your affairs right.

Greeting someone

Say

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ

As-salāmu ʿalaykum

Peace be upon you.

Reply

وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

Wa ʿalaykumu-s-salāmu wa raḥmatu-llāhi wa barakātuh

And upon you be peace, Allah ﷻ’s mercy and His blessings.

Thanking someone

جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا

Jazāka-llāhu khayran

May Allah ﷻ reward you with goodness.

In the name of Allah ﷻ; I rely upon Allah ﷻ. There is no power or strength except through Allah ﷻ.

O Allah ﷻ, I seek refuge in You from evil and impure beings.

I seek Your forgiveness.

Praise is for Allah ﷻ who gave us life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection.

Aʿūdhu bi-llāhi mina-sh-shayṭāni-r-rajīm

I seek refuge in Allah ﷻ from Satan, the rejected.

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Ḥasbuna-llāhu wa niʿma-l-wakīl

Allah ﷻ is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs.

When someone says, ‘I love you for Allah ﷻ’s sake’

They say

إِنِّي أُحِبُّكَ فِي اللَّهِ

Innī uḥibbuka fi-llāh

I love you for Allah ﷻ’s sake.

Reply

أَحَبَّكَ الَّذِي أَحْبَبْتَنِي لَهُ

Aḥabbaka-lladhī aḥbabtanī lah

May the One for whose sake you love me love you.

Congratulating someone on marriage

بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ، وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ، وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ

Bāraka-llāhu lak, wa bāraka ʿalayk, wa jamaʿa baynakumā fī khayr

May Allah ﷻ bless you, shower blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness.

Visiting someone who is ill

لَا بَأْسَ، طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Lā baʾsa, ṭahūrun in shāʾa-llāh

No harm; may it be a purification, if Allah ﷻ wills.

Making dua for a sick person

The Prophet ﷺ taught saying this seven times when visiting a person whose death is not imminent.

أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ

Asʾalu-llāha-l-ʿaẓīm, rabba-l-ʿarshi-l-ʿaẓīm, an yashfiyak

I ask Allah ﷻ the Magnificent, Lord of the magnificent Throne, to cure you.

ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ، وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

Dhahaba-ẓ-ẓamaʾu, wabtallati-l-ʿurūq, wa thabata-l-ajru in shāʾa-llāh

The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is assured, if Allah ﷻ wills.

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ، وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

Subḥāna-lladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn, wa innā ilā rabbinā la-munqalibūn

Glory is to Him who subjected this to us when we could not have controlled it, and surely to our Lord we will return.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi-lladhī kasānī hādhā wa razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa lā quwwah

Praise is for Allah ﷻ who clothed me with this and provided it for me without any power or strength from me.

Ending a gathering

This is known as the expiation of the gathering (kaffārat al-majlis).

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

Subḥānaka-llāhumma wa bi-ḥamdik, ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā ant, astaghfiruka wa atūbu ilayk

Glory and praise are Yours, O Allah ﷻ. I bear witness there is no god but You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.
